A small bag with a big story, this Lambani embroidered sling bag was made by the talented Lambani artists from the artisan cluster at Sandur Kushala Kala Kendra, a non-profit organisation empowering women artisans of the Bellary district in Karnataka, India. 

Lambani is derived from the Sanskrit word Lavana meaning salt. Commonly known as Banjaras, Lambanis are said to be semi-nomadic tribe who are descendants of the Arya Roma gypsies of Europe. They have said to have arrived in Rajasthan trading salt and grains which facilitated their move to different states.
In Karnataka, they are known as Lambanis. The Lambanis follow an animistic religion, worshiping nature and respecting natural processes which are all reflected vividly in their craft. 

This embroidery style is known as Kasuthi kelsa and it is unique to the Lambani community. Their distinctive style uses vivid colours, and ornate embellishments, geometrical shapes embroidered with contrasting coloured threads and decorated with shells, coins, mirrors and beads. According to local belief, Lambanis traditionally wore dresses with mirrors, to scare away wild animals in the jungles. 

This special bag is embroidered back and front, is embellished with cowrie shells and has two internal pockets, one zipped.

It  measures 23 x 17.5cm, not including the strap.
